I've now spent close to 700 hours on it according to Steam, and that doesn't include a couple hundred hours where I played an illegal copy in 2014. I was just "trying it out", I swear.

Whenever Factorio comes up on Hacker News, some software engineer inevitably complains "it's too much like my day to day work". Building things by hand, designing new architectures, blueprints and interfaces, the endless refactoring, coding and Factorio are very much the same. The complaint is that it's like a truck driver playing Truck Driver Simulator at night after driving the truck all day. It will just feel like too much of the same motions.

Well, that was before AI coding. Now the complaint of developers is "I just chat to Codex/Cursor/Claude and hit enter all the time, the craft is gone!". We no longer experience this coding, puzzling, refactoring loop that we really enjoyed pre Opus 4.6.

So lately, I've gone back to playing Factorio a couple of hours per month. Startup + family life doesn't allow for much more unfortunately.

Coding as it was is no longer economically viable, but playing Factorio was never about that.
